Using state-of-the-art equipment, the Emergency Management team coordinates response and relief activities in a timely manner. This includes identifying critical resources and needs, all in a concerted effort to limit the impact on life and property. Storey County Emergency Management works closely with local, regional, state and federal partners to provide information and assistance during emergencies.

The responsibilities of Emergency Management include, but are not limited to, the following:

§ Chair the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).

§ Write grants for Public Safety, FEMA, Nevada Emergency Management Department, state and federal grant programs or any other similar programs available to the local jurisdictions. These grants primarily support Fire, Sheriff and Public Works emergency response and mitigation plans and programs.

§ Conduct public awareness and education campaigns on emergency matters, evacuations, preparedness, awareness, from an all hazards approach to include the potential for terrorism, etc.

§ Coordinate activities, grants and planning with the Nevada State Emergency Response Commission.

§ Represent Storey County on the Rural Task Force of the State Homeland Security Commission.

§ Represent Storey County in dealings with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

§ Represent Storey County in all dealings and emergency coordination efforts with the Nevada Department of Emergency Management.

Manage the Emergency Operations Center (located in Virginia City) to facilitate coordination of emergency resources during significant emergency or disaster events in Storey County or with our mutual aid partners in adjoining counties or through the Nevada Emergency Mutual Aid Compact.
