Storey County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC)

Prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the LEPC program to address planning, response and mitigation of hazardous materials events in every county in America. Its primary function was to deal with those working with hazardous materials throughout the country. However, since 9/11, the LEPC duties have expanded to include both terrorism and natural disaster situations.

The LEPC is responsible for ensuring that the county's hazardous materials emergency operations plan is current, and works to secure equipment and planning grants from the State DEPARTMENT OF Emergency Management Commission, STATE EMERGENCY RESPONSE COMMISSION, STATE HOMELAND SECURITY, FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND OTHER RELATED GRANT OPPORTUNITIES. Membership in each county LEPC includes county department heads, public safety personnel, members of the business and industrial community, media, citizens interested in assisting, and other special knowledge persons that can provide input to the process.

Now, virtually all public safety-oriented state and federal grant programs are managed by the COUNTY LEPC and must pass through the committee prior to submission for consideration by the various state and federal grantors.

The LEPC is a public committee governed by the Nevada Open Meeting Law and its meetings are held on a quarterly basis.  MEETINGS ARE HELD QUARTERLY AND ARE POSTED ON THE COUNTY WEB PAGE, POST OFFICE, FIRE STATIONS AND IN EACH DISTRICT OF THE COUNTY AS PUBLIC NOTICES.
