The Justice of the Peace presides over the following actions:
- Felony and Gross Misdemeanor charges from the first appearance through the preliminary hearing.
- Traffic and misdemeanor citations and complaints including driving under the influence and domestic violence prosecutions from arraignment through trial and sentencing.
- Civil case actions are capped at $10,000.00 and generally require that attorneys be present since formal rules of civil procedure must be followed.
- Small Claims cases are limited to a recovery of $5,000.00. This is an informal proceeding where the plaintiff and defendant generally represent themselves.
- Landlord/Tenant disputes for non-payment of rent, for cause and no cause summary eviction actions.
- Orders for protection against Domestic Violence.
- Orders for protection against Stalking and/or Harrassment.
- Bail amounts and setting conditions of release.
- Warrants of arrest, bench warrants and search warrants.
- Weddings are performed by the Justice of the Peace by appointment only.
- Record searches: written requests only.
