The Storey County GIS Department creates, edits, manages and maintains all of the spatial data within the County boundary and additionally collects and utilizes data obtained from a variety of other county, state and federal agencies to compile up-to-date spatial maps and perform analyses. The GIS department works closely with the following offices to provide map products, including:
- Fire Department –county street atlas and map book
- Building and Planning Department - zoning maps
- Public Works – road networks, facilities and waterline maps
- Clerk/Treasurer’s Office - voter precinct maps
- Commissioner’s Office – Census Bureau and district maps
- Sheriff’s Office – detailed street maps
- Emergency Management – flood zone maps
- County Library – Virginia City town map
These maps are then used by the local and regional government to make informed decisions regarding development, environmental issues, fire districts, school zoning, habitat restoration efforts (e.g. McCarran Ranch Restoration Project), road planning and much more.
