GIS manages, analyzes and disseminates geographic knowledge by linking location data to other information (such as parcels to ownership). The common element among all spatial data is that it can be tied to a location on the earth’s surface.  GIS provides the ability to combine maps with databases that contain descriptive information about features on the earth’s surface.

The Storey County GIS department was created in 2007 to manage and provide spatial data, imagery and map products which are used by a number of County and State departments as well as made available to the general public. Data created by the GIS department or obtained from other sources such as the County Assessor’s Office or US Geological Survey is then processed, edited, analyzed and ultimately used to create maps and reports that are used by other departments within the County. The information supplied to governmental agencies helps support applications such as emergency dispatch, land use planning, emergency management and Homeland Security, property appraisal, civil engineering, natural resource monitoring, transportation planning, monitoring crime and accidents, public health and environmental analysis, economic development, census analysis and many more.

GIS analysis and map products allow Storey County to more effectively manage land in the County and address issues such as growth, residential and commercial development, emergency management and natural resource management.
