Living in Storey County

  • Recreation

Storey County offers a multitude of recreational opportunities among its 16,000 acres of public land. You’ll enjoy hiking, camping, horseback riding, 4-wheeling, bicycling, bird watching, hunting and fishing. Additionally, throughout the year, Storey County hosts a variety of special events. For an experience unlike any other, visit the annual Virginia City International Camel Races. The September event, which is held the weekend after Labor Day, draws people from destinations as far away as Australia, Africa and Saudi Arabia. The annual 4th of July parade and fireworks display is another favorite of citizens and visitors. Other “colorful” events in Storey County include Street Vibrations, the Outhouse Races, Chili Cook-offs, Railroad Festival, Mountain Oyster Fry, and several on and off road races.

Rides aboard the revitalized Virginia & Truckee Railroad meander into the hills of a once thriving gold and silver mining community and are another favorite excursion. And if you’d like to see a mine up close and personal, you can take a guided tour of the Chollar Mine, which was the Comstock’s fifth largest producer, or the Best & Belcher Mine at the Ponderosa. Both mines demonstrate complete mine operations.

  • Schools

Storey County places a tremendous emphasis on education. Our superintendent, school board of trustees, principals, teachers and staff are all dedicated to creating an enriching, caring atmosphere so our students have every opportunity available to obtain the best education possible. All schools have met the high federal and state standards in the required tests of academics. Additionally, all schools in Storey County have been awarded “high achieving” status.

Storey County schools are modern, clean and well-equipped. At the high school, a comprehensive public library is available to all students and residents offering a multitude of titles as well as a quiet study area and Internet access. Plus, Virginia City High School hosts a number of extra-curricular activities ranging from drama to sports. Storey County is home to two elementary schools (grades 1-6), a middle school (grades 7-8) and high school (grades 9-12) with a total enrollment of over 500 students.
