Business and Vacation Watch

Business and Vacation watches are provided to residents and business owners of Storey County by the Storey County Sheriff Office. If you are planning to leave town for an extended period of time, you can call the Police Department to have your home or business placed on an increased patrol list. Deputies patrolling your area will check on your home or business more regularly to help ensure everything is fine. Although we cannot guarantee your home or business will not be burglarized during your absence, our Business and Vacation watch program helps increase your security by stepping up a police presence. If you’d like to have your home or business placed on the Business or Vacation watch list, please contact our office. Additionally, please contact our office within one day of your return to cancel the service. Contact 847-0950 for a business or vacation watch.

Tips For Increasing Safety

The following tips may help you increase the security of your home and/or office while you are away from the property:

  1. Register on the Storey County Sheriff’s Office Business and Vacation watch list.

  2. Lock all windows and doors.

  3. Stop mail and cancel all deliveries or ask someone to place mail and deliveries inside the property.

  4. Make sure the property looks occupied, not empty.

  5. Put an automatic timer on several lights.

  6. If you’ll be gone for an extended period of time, ask someone to maintain your property. Nothing says “vacant” like accumulated, un-shoveled snow or overgrown grass.

  7. Leave a key with someone you trust.

  8. Consider storing valuables, and an extra property key, in a safe deposit box.
