The current detention center was built in 1992. In 2011, the detention center underwent major renovation using inmate labor to reduce costs. Following the renovation, the Storey County Detention Center is able to house 25 adult inmates (juveniles are housed in Carson City at the Juvenile Facility), has an isolation/observation cell, and is handicap accessible in accordance with Nevada law.

The detention center is located at 911 State Route 341 S. in Virginia City, and can be accessed by the truck route approximately ¼ mile from town.

Visiting Hours & Requirements

The Storey County jail is open for visitors on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
from 2 - 5 p.m.

All visitors must be 18 years old and have a valid identification card. A parent or legal guardian must accompany all minors. Proof of guardianship must be shown. A maximum of two minors per adult are permitted per visit.

Visitation may be terminated under certain circumstances and if deemed necessary by the deputy on duty.

Mail may be sent to inmates by addressing mail to the inmate, adding the inmate's number, Storey County Detention Center, PO Box 498, Virginia City, NV 89440.

The jail will not accept or distribute any packages or cash sent through the mail. Please note, inmates are not allowed to receive from visitors--or through the mail--the following items:

• Any photos containing nudity
• Cards
• Correspondence from other correctional facilities
• Miscellaneous loose items like confetti
• Physical contact visits
• Polaroid pictures
• Postage stamps or return envelopes
• Stickers or items glued to correspondence
