FAQS
Situated in the heart of the old “Wild West,” Storey County’s history is incredibly rich with colorful stories of boom and bust. And no story would be complete without a villain! Storey County’s original jail housed a number of crooks--including the murderer of the infamous Julia Bulette--and undoubtedly played a lively role in the county’s history.

1875 Fire

In October of 1875, a massive fire swept through Virginia City, wiping out many of the buildings and homes. Unfortunately, the first jail was one of the victims of this fire. The county jail was rebuilt, and the facility served the county until 1987.

From 1987 until 1992, Storey County contracted with Carson City Sheriff’s Office for handling of criminals, at which time the current facility was erected and continues to serve the county today.
