When Rates Are Set
The tax rate is proposed by Storey County to the commissioners in April of each year based on youth and indigent services (medical, assistant, and accident) needs. Prior to the budget hearings, the county will publish a newspaper ad that identifies any property tax rate increases and the times and places for the different budget hearings. These budget hearings present an opportunity for residents to question expenditures and the property tax rates that will be set to cover the proposed expenditures.
The local government’s budget must be adopted no later than June 1 of each year. In June, the Nevada Tax Commission approves the property tax rates based on the budgets submitted by the local governments. New tax rates take effect on July 1 of each year.
When Taxes Are Due
The Treasurer's Office mails out real property tax bills only 1 time each year. If you do not receive your tax bill by August 1st each year, please contact the Storey County Treasurer’s Office at 775-847-0969 to request a copy. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve the responsibility for payment, nor constitute cause for cancellation of penalty and/or cost charges if the tax bill becomes delinquent.
Property tax installments are due on the 3rd Monday in August, and 1st Monday in October, January, and March.
