The duties of the Justice of the Peace include the following:

• Criminal Cases: Felony and Gross Misdemeanor Cases - (First appearance through the preliminary hearing only)
• Misdemeanor Cases
• Traffic Citations
• Civil Actions: Most civil actions where the amount of damages in controversy does not exceed $15,000
• Small Claims: Plaintiff is requesting a monetary award not to exceed $10,000
• Landlord / Tenant Disputes: Non-payment of rent, for cause, and no cause summary eviction actions
• Orders for Protection: Order for Protection Against Domestic Violence, Stalking and/or Harassment, Protection of Children, and Protection in the Workplace.

The Justice of the Peace also performs weddings.
